10 Home Remedies for Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid Arthritis is a chronic disorder that mainly affects the joints through inflammation flare-ups. It is classified as an autoimmune disorder which occurs because the immune system attacks body tissue. This is why the disorder affects more than just an individual’s joints. Specifically with RA, the immune system attacks of synovium lining of the membranes around the joints. Over time this affects the tendons and ligaments as they become stretched and weakened, eventually losing alignment. Whilst there is no cure for the disorder, there are home remedies to help you cope.
1. Use Hot and Cold Compresses: These are really good for those who are suffering from RA as they help ease the symptoms as the cold curbs the inflammation and the heat will relax the muscles and increase the blood flow to the joints. You apply the cold treatment for fifteen minutes at a time. Whilst you put the hot press on for five minutes at a time. Do a thirty-minute break between applications.
2. Exercise When Possible: Exercise helps with the other symptoms that come with RA, including fighting off fatigue, strengthening up your muscles, and increasing the range of motion that you have with your joints. You don’t need to exercise a tremendous amount, just for thirty minutes three-four times a week. Just thirty minutes of motion range exercises daily will benefit. If you can, do strengthening exercises three-four times a week as well.
3. Fish Oil: A known to reduce stiffness in joints and has an anti-inflammatory effect on the body which can help with the joint pain that RA sufferers are used to. Those who have RA are more prone to heart disease as well. So taking a daily dose of fish oil can help protect against it.
4. Garlic: Garlic is also an anti-inflammatory food which can help reduce the pain and swelling that comes with RA. It can also help promote a healthy immune system through the inhibition of free radicals, which cause damage to the joints.
5. Drink Apple Cider Vinegar: The main reason this is recommended is because it has a ton of minerals. These will help strengthen the muscles and ligaments. Apple Cider Vinegar has calcium, magnesium, potassium, and phosphorus in it. Making a powerhouse for treating arthritis.
6. Use Turmeric for Its Active Ingredient: It is highly recommended that sufferers of arthritis use turmeric in their cooking. The active ingredient is curcumin which is an anti-inflammatory, and anti-arthritic substance. It often works better than non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
7. Epsom Salt: Bathing with Epsom salts us a great way to reduce the swelling and pain in the joints. It decreases the amount of stiffness in muscles as it helps regulate the pH levels of the body and has a ton of magnesium in it. The great thing about Epsom salts is you can bathe in them as often as you want for relief.
8. Massage the Joints and Muscles: Either massage yourself or get your partner to help with the more difficult areas. Massage will stimulate effective blood flow to the affected areas. This will help reduce the inflammation that you experience and provide relief through relaxation.
9. Apply Topical Solutions: For other relief options, you can go with a topical ointment. These will provide temporary relief. You can either use a lotion, cream, or gel that contains menthol, camphor, or salicylates. These will help relax the area.
10. Utilize Tai Chi: Practice using movement therapy once or twice a day. These gentle exercises can help reduce stress which can aggravate inflammation in the body. They also utilize deep breathing techniques which will promote full-body relaxation. Keep in mind though, that any movement that causes a lot of pain should be avoided.
In addition, it is incredibly important to make sure that you are getting plenty of sleep. This will help keep your body in proper regulatory cycles. It also helps reduce stress levels and aids in the recovery of inflammation flare-ups. If you are not getting enough sleep at night, try using meditation or self-hypnosis to induce a more calming sleep.
