Amazing Uses Of Eucalyptus Essential Oil
One of our favourites has to be Eucalyptus essential oil. The eucalyptus tree is an evergreen that is native to Australia. Whilst it is more famous for being the primary food source of those cute koala bears, it also has some powerful medicinal qualities for humans. The Oil is extracted by the process of steam distilling the fresh eucalyptus leaves. It can then be applied either topically or inhaled to alleviate a number of conditions. It’s antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and reduces pain.
Lets take a look at some of the wonderful effects of this oil.
1. Cuts and Grazes
The antiseptic and antimicrobial properties make it perfect for treating cuts, grazes and burns. It can also be used to treat insect bites and stings. Whilst you should never put on an open wound, it will speed up the healing process by applying to the affected area after bleeding has stopped.
2. Respiratory Problems
Eucalyptus oil is extremely effective for treating respiratory problems, such as bronchitis and asthma. When inhaled, the oil dilates the blood vessels to allow the lungs to take in more oxygen. It also soothes the airways to make breathing easier. It’s no coincidence that most cough sweets and treatments contain eucalyptus.
3. Detergent and Sanitiser
As well as having a refreshing scent, due to its anti-microbial and antibacterial properties, it makes a great ingredient for detergent. You can add several drops to your household products such as soap, hand sanitiser, laundry detergent and to floor cleaner.
4. Blocked Sinuses and Congestion
When combined with hot water, the vapour helps to breaks down mucus build up, leading to congestion. You can do this by adding several drops to a bowl of hot water and inhale for ten minutes. Or simply put a few drops on a handkerchief and inhale on the go. It’s so handy to have in your bag or pocket.
5. Bed Bug Repellent
Rejuvenate your mattress naturally with a spray made from this and a couple more essential oils. Add 10 drops of eucalyptus essential oil, 10 drops lavender essential oil and 10 drops tea tree oil to a small spray bottle and top up with water and shake to mix. Spray each side of your mattress to get rid of insects.
6. Get Rid of Spots
Eucalyptus essential oil is great at destroying the bacteria that clogs the pores of your skin. The antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties not only help to kill bacteria, but also to dry out the build up of oil secretion. Cleaning the affected area and reducing redness and inflammation.
7. Fights Cold Sores
Cold sores are painful, irritating and generally an unpleasant condition that blights our winter months. When the blister starts to form, you feel that tingling sensation around the mouth. With eucalyptus oil you can stop the sore before it becomes takes hold. Put one drop of eucalyptus oil and one drop of tea tree oil onto a cotton bud and gently rest on the affected area. This will help kill the bacteria and reduce the redness before the sore fully forms.
