Iodine is essential for thyroid health, helping it to work effectively. If you don’t get enough iodine, you run the risk of hypothyroidism or an enlarged thyroid.
Fish is a great source of this vital nutrient, helping the thyroid to function well. One average portion of cod contains about 100mg of iodine which is around 66% of your daily recommended intake.
Another great way to up your intake of iodine is through seaweed, which is packed full of nutrients and is a major staple in Asian diets.
Try introducing a seaweed salad to your diet once a week, as it will boost your intake and is so tasty.
Packed with thyroid health friendly antioxidants, berries are high in vitamin C and are great for eliminating toxins from the body. They help reduce the harm of free radicals which can also lead to the condition hypothyroidism.
Blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, goji berries, and cranberries are all great for a healthy boost.
Dairy products are full of nutrients and Greek yogurt is one of the champions of this food group due to its low fat content.
Plain, low-fat Greek yogurt is a fantastic source of iodine and can make up around 50% of your daily intake. Try adding some blueberries and other chopped fruit and nuts for a health packed start to the day.
Brazil nuts are a great source of selenium which helps regulate thyroid hormones. Studies show people who consumed higher amounts of selenium were less likely to develop thyroid issues.
Just one kernel contains 96 micrograms, which is almost double the daily recommended intake of 55 micrograms. But remember to not go too overboard as too much selenium can lead to health problems such as hair loss. Like everything, moderation is key.
Avoid Processed foods
Sometimes known as the silent killer, processed foods are jam packed with things detrimental to your health. Processed foods such as microwave meals, fast food, canned soups and other convenience foods are often loaded with harmful amounts of salt and other chemicals.
A high salt intake has been linked to heart disease and other health issues such as high blood pressure. Sure, it’s ok now and then when pushed for time. But more than a couple of times a week, especially when you’re not eating a balanced, fruit and vegetable loaded diet. That’s when the free radicals run riot leading to health issues.
